One of the main challenges for new servers on here is discovering content to interact with.
Relays speed up the discovery process, and allow even a single user server to automatically see a large part of the Fediverse.
There's a new relay service by @astro@c3d2.social called FediBuzz Relay:
It allows servers to subscribe to custom relays based on tags or instances. (If you use this, can you let us know your experiences in the replies?)
Don't you wish you had extra hands?
Libraries when you're homeless.
Libraries when you're homeless.
People talking about libraries, and I'd like to add from long-term experience that if you're homeless, those places are vital. Reading the newspaper while sitting on, y'know, a *chair*, hopefully a drinking fountain (No dehydration? Fancy) reading some books, not being too cold or too hot, lovely.
Oh, and you can sort out official stuff, which is handy when you ain't got an address. There was even a lady at one who liked to share food around. Like, you didn't eat it inside, obviously, but food? Nice.
Hell, just about the only things they didn't have were a place to wash or sleep, but you could learn stuff, rest a little, get out of the weather, not be on your guard all the time, (and can't get arrested, cause you're not 'loitering' in a library) and, here's the good part:
You could send your mind somewhere else. Like, without chemicals. You pick up a book and you just escape. That's priceless if you're homeless.
Which is the perfect price, cause you ain't got money.
A heart. A soul. A mind. That's what a library is. And bless em for existing.
Gonna stop there, cause I'm getting all teary and shit.

Do your dance, do your dance
It's been one of those days. I'm exhausted physically and emotionally. I wish I could just crawl into bed and watch a few hours of anime and sleep.
But, I have to clean up and get the kids to bed.
This is definitely a day I wish I could opt out of adulting.
Somebody just called me a hypochondriac and I have no idea what that is but I'm pretty sure I have it.
Do they not see me?
The US really proved the saying that if libraries were created today, they would be illegalized and shut down instantly
So @internetarchive scanning books for their digital library is copyright infringement:
http://blog.archive.org/2023/03/25/the-fight-continues/
But OpenAI slurping all of that to train a model that then can generate text and put actual authors out of business (already happening with copywriters), is not.
Figures, there are no $billions of VC / corporate money behind Internet Archive, why would anyone want to support a public service, right? 🤦♀️
IA ≠ AI, know the difference!

Reminder that "just move" is not a viable solution for a lot of trans people and our families.
In 1968, at 30 years old, Lynn Conway transitioned. In doing so she lost her wife, her children, and her job at IBM. She continued on, living authentically as her true self and continued her career as an electral engineer. In 1978 she became an associate professor at MIT and taught a course in VLSI (very large scale integration) that became the basis of the Mead-Conway VLSI Design Methodology, changing how we design integrated circuits. In 1985 she became a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Michigan, and later the associate dean of engineering.
32 years after transitioning, Conway came out publicly as a transgender woman. Since than she has been a advocate for transgender people in the tech sector. In 2020 IBM formally apologized for firing Conway for being trans, over 50 years after the fact. Just a bit of #transHistory I learned today.

Why should the brain be enclosed in a box composed of such numerous and such extraordinarily shaped pieces of bone?
Mozilla´s yearly festival MozFest had three sessions about the fediverse this year. I visited them to see what people are talking about.
One session was about community-led moderation, proposing the partial outsourcing of moderation needs for servers. Another involved an interactive workshop on designing the fediverse, with participants excited for other platforms beyond Mastodon, and talking about what can be better.
