@256 I used the line-in from a soundboard to record a couple different punk shows back in the day. Was a really cool device. Used it until it could provide no more. Interface was janky if your mp3 tags were in disarray. Then along came ipod. Though it was missing the line-in, which I made great use of.

I remember seeing those in person at stores. You can look at the picture of the back there to see just how thick it was.
