What team of outsourced MBAs gets pay and bonuses to think up this sort of micromanaged bullshit? Changing fonts on govt documents? It's very Stalinesque.
@w7voa None of the senior government people read anything (even the ones who can). So it doesn't really matter. They should use Comic Sans - it would fit with their adminstration.
@w7voa Calibri is considered more readable to people with, for instance, aging eyes.
That's the kind of diversity they're fighting now.
@w7voa what a petty little man
@w7voa Not The Onion.
@w7voa wat?!
@w7voa good Lord don't these people have real jobs to do with important work?
@w7voa What a dipshit.
@w7voa Hot off the press... Trumpistan bans the internet. Then Drumpf realises that untruth social is on the internet. Head explodes.
@w7voa
Trump struggle to read it? The man needs to wear his glasses, but with his vanity and ego, he refuses to do it on camera. He'd rather look like an idiot and inconvenience everyone else.
@w7voa And here I was thinking this administration’s official font was Wingdings
@w7voa They’ll be mandating the Roman salute soon
@w7voa @GossiTheDog Sounds foreign to me. They should move to Apple and have access to fonts like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco!
@w7voa
Die Probleme möchte ich haben...
Aber wenn schon Willkür, dann richtig. "Auf die Knie!"
@w7voa if the trump administration is really worried about Woke Fonts and would prefer something by someone more in line with their values, might I suggest they consider Gill Sans.
@w7voa And he gets paid for that. 🙄
@w7voa I hate Rubio, but I also hate Calibri. Now more people will use Calibri. Damn you, Rubio.
@w7voa Why not use Comic Sans instead?
Visual contrast increases the inclusiveness of the audience, therefore all public communication must be white on white.
Black on black is clearly too woke.
@w7voa at this point the idea is simply to copy all the things the Nazis ever did.
@w7voa just when I think news from the US couldn't possibly be any dumber, I open Mastodon. ... and Surprise!!
@w7voa it's the sheer petulance that gets me.
The right thinks we're pissed at their words and actions, and we are, but not for the reasons they think we are.
It's gold toilet petty cringe.
@w7voa the state department was actually in the process of switching to Aptos before this admin came in because it was even more accessible to people with disabilities like speech to text as well as individuals with dyslexia because of the font being cleaner and crisp. Wild.
Fonts won't feed my kids. We need aid, not typography wars. #GazaNeedsHelp
@w7voa could it be because "donnie" the Trump can't read anything longer than a sentence long message in 500pt Times New Roman
@w7voa what did Calibri do 😭
Bunch of dingbats!
@w7voa this is, of course, pure madness of the US junta. But I must admit to being fed up with being called Lain because the lower case l and the upper case I are indistinguishable. I adopted Serif fonts a while back, now I see that even Microsoft moved to Aptos. But really, these are appropriate decisions of state? Does not the Secretary of State have any more important concern about Gaza, Sudan or Venezuela?
@w7voa What’s next? Tabs vs Spaces?
@w7voa You just know that the next move is Roman Numerals...then Latin...then the Sun revolves around Earth.
@w7voa For a discussion about pros and cons of different fonts, and in particular serif vs sans serif, I found this web page, unlike Rubio’s ignorant opinions, useful: https://inkbotdesign.com/sans-serif-vs-serif-font/
@w7voa I think it was a negative reference to the dream of a free state of California or some shit.
@w7voa Calibri is now my new favorite font.
@w7voa
Give me Calibri or give me death.
bet if calibri had been a conquering empire, it would have been fine.
fascists sure love to think they're the obvious heir of the roman empire...
@w7voa The fact that the *United States Secretary of State*, is politicizing a damn font (FONT!), is absurd. That's not in the SOS's job description. A dangerous man, this Rubio.
How *does* one conclude that a font is political and decide of what political persuasion it is?
Utterly baffling.
@w7voa
But it is merit-based. The merit is the better readability. I hope a wild animal chews his eyeballs out while he sleeps.
@w7voa what is the DUI font? That’s what the administration should be using
@w7voa From a WIRED article about why the initial switch to Calibri was made , "Calibri also has a larger character set, allowing it to be used for more languages and in more use cases than Times"
I think that it's more accessible was a bonus.
@w7voa this would be funny if these targets weren't marked for death already for their crimes against humanity.
@w7voa Can't tell if this is the Onion or not.
@w7voa
I physically NEED this to be an article from The Onion.
The Nazis, in 1941, banned the Fraktur font because it was “too Jewish.” https://alphahistory.com/pastpeculiar/1941-nazis-ban-jewish-fonts/
@w7voa [putting on my OCAD typography professor hat] This was at least the official reason, despite the Nazis championing Fraktur until 1941. Another theory was that Luftwaffe pilots complained that they couldn’t read aircraft tail markings in Fraktur. I’ve also heard that it was Bormann who despised Fraktur, and Hitler may have simply signed a document that Bormann shoved in front of him without reading it. We will likely never know for sure.
@w7voa Fraktur... the font like 80% of bibles were printed in?
@w7voa What?! Fraktur is the Germanliest of all fonts.
@w7voa With a letterhead in Fraktur. These Nazis were always a very intelligent bunch.
@w7voa At the outset of the 20th century "classic" (English renaisssance inspired) fonts dominated, to be challenged by modernist bauhaus fonts in the 1920's. When nazi's came to power in 33, fraktur, later national romantic type, was promoted and modernist type deprecated. But there never were a consensus, as the armed forces continued to use modernist type.
Here is a timeline from 1930-1935, showing the typography of the Imprimatur journal (from Nordlunde, 1952):
@w7voa an apt reference.
@w7voa With a document using Fraktur…
@w7voa at school we called the german newspaper font and everything that looks like it (eg old english) ye old nazi
@w7voa
Alt story on the wiki
@w7voa Isn’t it great how these people take every opportunity to emulate the nazis?
@w7voa it's been a long time since I agreed with Marco Rubio on anything but he's entirely correct here
@w7voa Please tell me you're joking.
@w7voa Sad. They have nothing else to do 🙄.
@w7voa
What the actual.....
@w7voa fuckwits
@w7voa Why not just go with Fraktur blackletter font and get over it.
@w7voa ...what
@w7voa petty
@w7voa This is just getting stupid at this point. Will he now outlaw adherence to the ADA?
Secretary of State Rubio has concluded Calibri is a DEI font and orders US diplomats to revert to Times New Roman in official communications. https://www.devdiscourse.com/article/politics/3725456-font-wars-times-new-roman-vs-calibri-in-us-diplomacy
