The latest episode of #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds, Wedding Bell Blues, has certainly caused quite a bit of controversy in the Trek community. Just have a look at this debate (spoilers, of course) over on Memory Alpha (the Trek wiki). It seems like they were trying to settle controversies, like how the Augment Virus was meant to settle the debate about Klingon appearance, but they just raised many more questions than they actually answered.

@danjones000 @Binder very tempted to pipe in over the comment that ‘the accent was the same’. But I guess I’d have to go back and watch the TOS Trelane episode to confirm that he didn’t have a Kiwi accent (which is not how I remember it), because the wedding planner clearly did…

If people want to be this awful about things: The character is billed as "Wedding Planner" and John DeLancie is "Wedding Planner's Father". The episode doesn't state it's Trelane at all.

In practice: It was obviously supposed to be Trelane and obviously supposed to be Q. Even the producers state that.

They gave too much credit to the imagination and joy of Star Trek viewers and forgot all of the people who think anything past Voyager is already inferior.

People want to be mad.

Strange New Worlds, Wedding Bell Blues spoilers

Personally, I never wanted Trelane to be a Q, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the episode and am happy with this particular addition to the canon.

I'm not convinced that Trelane's father was intended to be Q, specifically, but certainly a Q, who happened to also be played by John de Lancie. In fact, I have a feeling that Trelane was meant to be Q himself, as a child, and now we've got John de Lancie playing the character in TNG/DS9/Voy/Pic/LD, but playing his father in SNW. I think that would be an elegant way to do it.

But, whatever they do to address it further (if anything) is going to upset people however they do it. Some people are just happier being unhappy.
