Why don't more people use desktop Linux?

The author argues that people don't use Linux because there's not a single flagship distribution that people can just use.

I respectfully disagree. The reason people don't use Linux is because it's not on their computer.

Google has proven with Chromebooks that people don't care what OS they use. As long as they can find the web browser, and maybe a word processor, they're fine.

That's all that 95% of people need.

Most people don't know you can change your operating system. Many don't even know what an operating system is.

You want desktop Linux to happen? Mainstream manufacturers need to preinstall it. That's all.

I'm working on a new fedi server, and wanted to build on top of existing ActivityPub C2S API, rather than creating my own API.

I was looking through some of the specs for ideas. One of the things I want to have is similar to Mastodon lists but more hierarchical, and I was trying to think of a good way to represent this. The lists should be an OrderedCollection, but I'm thinking about discovery. Basically, I want an easy way for the client to discover these user-defined lists in an AP-conformant way.

So, on the actor object, there's this field that MAY be included:

streams: A list of supplementary Collections which may be of interest.

I think this is probably what I need, but this isn't very specific about how this field is formatted. And I've never seen this used in the wild. I'm not sure if this is a simple array of URLs to Collections, or a Collection of Collections, or perhaps an object of key/value pairs with the values being links to the Collections.

@[email protected] says on ActivityPub Primer:

This property is not widely implemented. There is not a clear way to filter the list of Collections according to what a client application may need. For example, a client application that wants to show contact lists to the user would not have an easy way to find only contact lists in streams. A client application that wants to show photo albums to the user would not have an easy way to find only photo albums in streams.

He suggests using extensions, in lieu of streams, but since it's not clear exactly how this property is to be used, I'm not sure if this would be insufficient for my needs or not.

Does anybody have any more insight into this field and how to use it?

Keep Us Connected definitely is an earworm.

I've been humming it all morning.

Although, I did watch the episode twice yesterday, and a YouTube video of the song a couple times as well.

I have a coworker who pronounces the noun attribute the same as the verb attribute, and it's weirdly distracting. It comes up a lot during technical discussions.

Just the opening scene from Subspace Rhapsody is making me so very happy.

You guys have no idea how long I've wanted a Star Trek musical.

Tomorrow, I'm going to be the parent of a teenager. Hard to believe I was allowed to be a parent at all, much less a parent of a young adult.

I can't believe it's my two year work anniversary already.

This was probably the best job change I've made. I still enjoy working at GRIN two years later.

Good Omens 2x01 minor spoiler

You know how sometimes when you're streaming a show or movie, and your Internet connection gets a little bit wonky so the video quality drops for a little while?

I was just watching the season 2 premiere of Good Omens when, during the scene where they perform a little miracle. Prime Video decided to choose that exact moment to drop my video quality.

So, Aziraphale and Crowley are looking around like, "So, did it work?", and I'm like, "Yeah, it sure worked for me. I can barely see him now."
